Ossipee updates: transfer-station scale to be replaced; Deer Run Trail work, park events and skate‑park plan discussed

Town staff and public commenters provided several operational updates and event notices during the public-input and staff-report portions of the Select Board meeting.

Transfer station scale: A resident raised a concern that a vehicle weigh-in showed a 20‑pound discrepancy. A town speaker said Maine Scales conducts inspections and that Rice Lake — the scale manufacturer — recently inspected and calibrated the unit and will replace the deck under warranty because of rust. The speaker said the scale is calibrated in 20‑pound increments and that replacements and routine adjustments are intended to keep readings consistent; the town acknowledged small variances can favor or disadvantage a user depending on the reading.

Deer Run Trail and community events: Gina (identified in comment) announced that the Deer Run Trail contractor, Sam Blakely of Hermit Woods, will begin work in the lower lot; signs from a removed boardwalk will remain during construction. The town expects the trail to be ready by Labor Day and scheduled a dedication and ribbon cutting on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 11 a.m. Gina also announced a rescheduled "Party in the Park" from a June 28 rainout; the event will run 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., include a "touch a truck" exhibit, vendors, nonprofits, music and food trucks, and a color run organized by the PTO.

Skate park repurpose discussion: Town staff and residents discussed requests to repair the skate park. Town representatives said skateboarding use is low (about two users per month) and raised liability and maintenance concerns. Staff proposed repainting the area as a multiuse court with two basketball hoops and lines for pickleball to increase regular use; the existing fence would remain and some woodwork would be painted. A resident who has skated said gaps in the obstacles reduce usability and supported trying a different use.

Roadwork and closures: The board said Wolfeboro will extend its paving to cover 1,100 feet of Beach Bond Road that currently becomes dirt at the town line; the town accepted the contractor's bid to continue pavement to Pork Hill Road. Town staff warned that Each Pond Road will be closed for an estimated 3–5 hours on Wednesday, July 6 (date cited in the meeting) for pipe work and related construction.

Unsafe structure and property removal: Resident Frank Burgess raised concerns about a deteriorating house on Door's Corner Road that appears to be failing and could be a public-safety hazard. A town speaker said the town has been working with assessors and that roof framing had to be removed to allow the inspection and subsequent removal work; town staff said removal is scheduled but did not provide a specific completion date.

Planning board decision: The meeting record includes one notice of decision from the Planning Board: for Map 44, Lot 6058 (Deer Cove Road), Case 2501 S.U., the Planning Board granted a special‑use permit; the notice is filed for review. The Select Board indicated it had no additional action on that file.

Hotel relocations: A commenter asked whether guests from a PK hotel had been moved to Ossipee. A town speaker said that the town is not involved in the housing arrangement; such placements are managed by welfare, emergency management, or the county, and the town would not be handling any billing related to those placements.
