Bannock County commissioners deny $1,200 cremation expense request

Chantelle Latulu, an indigent services staff member for Bannock County, presented case number 20250048 on Aug. 5, an application for cremation expenses submitted through Cornelison Funeral Home for $1,200 and recommended denial.

"The recommendation is a denial pursuant to Idaho code 31 34 0 3," Latulu said, citing the statutory basis for the recommendation and telling commissioners that county records did not show the county as the payer of last resort for the bill.

Latulu told the commission she reviewed available resources and determined "Bannock County does not appear to be the last resource for payment of these final expenses based on the resources that I was able to find." Commissioners asked no follow-up questions, and a motion to adopt the staff recommendation to deny the request carried.

The board did not attach additional conditions or a payment plan to the denial. The record supplied at the meeting did not specify whether any alternative assistance or referral was offered to the applicant.

The denial was taken during the indigent services agenda item; the clerk and county staff processed the case record and the vote was recorded as adopting the staff recommendation to deny. No further appeals or next-step procedures were announced at the meeting.
