Summary
District staff told the governing board major school construction projects at Eastmark High and Chrisman High are complete or nearly complete, and a new transportation yard and concession building are finishing final punch-list work. Staff also described design work for a new access road and a completed turn lane on Ray Road.
Queen Creek Unified School District staff told the governing board on the evening the district’s major construction projects are largely wrapping up, with Eastmark High School and Chrisman High School recently completed and a new transportation yard and concession building nearing turnover.
The update, presented by Amber Bordas and Bob Lawson, said Eastmark’s recently added gymnasium, performing-arts classrooms and the second half of an academic wing were completed following an SFD (School Facilities Division) award that Bordas said was over $25 million. Chrisman High received an academic-wing expansion of about 37,000 square feet providing 23 classrooms after an SFD award Bordas said was over $15 million. Both projects were described as under budget and in use by the schools.
At the transportation yard, located at Queen Creek Junior High School, Lawson said paving, curb, gutter and landscaping were finished and that new automatic gates and RFID readers were being installed; he said the district anticipates moving buses into the yard the following week. Lawson said the final work will include installing a small portable trailer, with permitting pending at the state and county levels.
Lawson said the district expects to turn over a new concession building after a punch-walk inspection scheduled for the week, with kitchen equipment installation nearly complete and a turnover date of August 15 specified for that work.
On other items, Lawson reported the new access road from Chrisman to Cloud is in design; he said the district’s engineer met the city at the 30% drawing stage and full design and construction documents are expected in the fall, with construction starting after the new year. He also said a new turn lane from Ray Road onto Copernicus is essentially complete, that fiber relocation has been finished and will be turned over to the district on August 15, and that the contractor has been paving and finishing remaining work.
A board member asked whether the temporary access road would remain entry and exit; Lawson said it will be entry and exit with a roundabout at the intersection and that the route will be paved to be permanent. A board member also noted a report that the city might install a traffic camera at an intersection near Eastmark; Lawson said he understood there would be a traffic signal but was not certain of additional city installations.
Board President Davis and staff concluded the construction update and invited any further questions from the board.
