The council held a first reading June 24 on a proposed rezoning that would change residential parcels south of Carpenter Street to a C2 multiuse designation and set a public hearing for the second reading at the July 8 council meeting.
Mike from the Community and Economic Development Department presented the proposal, which would leave residential uses permitted by right while expanding allowable commercial uses on the south side of Carpenter. Staff said the change is intended to accommodate existing commercial uses that predate the current zoning map (including a bar, party store and a medical center) and to encourage future retail and grocery investment along the corridor.
Planning commission review and public notices preceded the recommendation; staff said the planning commission voted to recommend the rezoning. Councilmembers asked whether noise and other potential impacts from commercial openings would be addressed; staff said standard noise ordinances and land-use regulations would continue to apply and that existing complaints about specific businesses were enforceable under current ordinances.
The council scheduled a public hearing and second reading for July 8 to receive public comment before a final vote.
