Council approves $148,000 roof and structural repairs for police reserve garage

Hamtramck City Council on June 24 approved repairs and a gabled roof replacement for a recently acquired building intended to house the police reserve unit and other city uses.
City staff reported that during removal of interior drywall and mold remediation inspectors discovered extensive rot and failing joists beneath a previously installed roofing membrane. Hennessy Engineering inspected the building and staff concluded the roof structure was not salvageable for safe storage.
Staff recommended replacing the flat membrane roof with a pitched gable roof, repairing block walls and adding overhangs and gutters to protect the structure. The city manager and staff said the building will be multipurpose — serving reserve police storage and some DPS activities — and that, while a larger new building had been contemplated, repairing the current structure is the most cost-effective near-term approach.
Council members asked whether the work could wait until a pending grant was awarded; staff said grant agreements are not finalized and timing would delay an urgent need to move reserve equipment. Staff estimated the work at roughly $148,000 and said that reproducing the building anew would cost substantially more.
Council approved the resolution to proceed with repairs and roof replacement and directed staff to continue pursuing grant funding and report back on any eligible reimbursements.
