Tammy Zimmerman, the district’s chief facilities officer, told trustees the contract is for replacement of the school’s cooling systems; the school’s heating and cooling are separate systems. "This is our last pod type school for that, but it is solely for the purposes of cooling," Zimmerman said. She added the district had begun investigating an icing issue related to condensate or roof drains and was coordinating maintenance and safety work prior to winter.
Trustees asked whether longer‑term alternatives, such as geothermal systems, had been considered. Zimmerman said ground‑source heat pumps exist at some new district schools but replacing Jerry Whitehead’s system with a one‑off solution would create maintenance and training challenges for district staff; the district prefers consistent systems across schools.
Trustee Westlake made the motion to award the contract and Clerk Woodley seconded. The board approved the contract 7‑0 and Zimmerman said staff will continue work to address the icing concern before winter.
