City outlines road closures and route as Cedar Falls hosts RAGBRAI stop

City staff told the Cedar Falls City Council on July 21 that the city will host tens of thousands of riders and visitors for RAGBRAI this week and outlined the route, road closures and operational details residents should expect.
Director Sheets (staff) described the cyclists’ route: riders will enter from the west on Highway 57/West First Street, move south on Union Road to Twelfth Street, pass Birdsall Park, cross Hudson Road, enter Main Street, go under the new arch on Main Street and enter downtown. The route detours off Main Street where the big stage is located, uses Washington Street briefly, and then returns to Main Street to cross First Street at the light because First Street cannot be closed.
Staff warned downtown and the West First/Main Street intersection will be very busy Friday morning as riders leave. The Gateway Park area is the main camping area; Washington Park, Pfeiffer Park, Veterans Park, Overman Park and Lookout Park were listed as additional camping or event sites. Twelfth Street will remain open but will carry intermittent heavy cyclist traffic; Green Hill Road (between West 30th and West 27th/20th — described in staff remarks) will be closed as a check-in spot for large support vehicles. The city will post no-parking zones on Twelfth and Washington streets and close some compost facility access for the event day. Staff said letters were sent to nearby businesses and residents about closures and access and that public safety personnel will staff key intersections.
Mayor and staff estimated the event will bring 30,000-plus visitors to town and asked residents for patience given the traffic disruptions and closures. Staff encouraged businesses and residents to consult the official RAGBRAI schedule and said most riders will be pushed out of town by midmorning on Friday so congestion will be concentrated around the morning exit period.
Why it matters: RAGBRAI will generate substantial temporary congestion and concentrated visitor activity downtown and in parks; the city’s closures and parking restrictions are intended to protect cyclists and manage support vehicles and camping.
What’s next: Staff urged residents to plan alternate routes, follow posted no-parking and closure notices, and check official event schedules for entertainment times and street-access information.
