Veterans service office introduces new deputy and outlines outreach, training and events

County veterans service staff introduced new Deputy Veterans Service Officer Eric Lewis and reviewed recent outreach events, training plans and upcoming community events and nominations.
Todd Rose, Codington County’s veteran service officer, introduced Eric Lewis as the county’s new deputy veterans service officer. Lewis started Aug. 1 and Rose said Lewis has completed county onboarding and is working toward accreditation through the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs.
Rose and staff summarized recent outreach: a veterans information day with about 36 attendees, a yellow ribbon event for returning soldiers, and a family ceremony where medals were awarded to a Vietnam veteran. Rose said the events were well received and that continued outreach is needed so veterans are aware of available services.
Upcoming events and deadlines Rose mentioned include a state training conference (Sept. 9–12) where accreditation training will occur; nominations for Veterans of the Year due Sept. 30; and a military appreciation event at Joy Ranch on Nov. 8 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Rose said he will meet with area commanders and be on local radio to promote services. He also said a work-study employee who helped the office is on deployment in Germany and has indicated she intends to return but her availability is not yet certain.
Rose said the veterans office budget for the period under review had been examined by commissioners earlier in the meeting.
