Summary
The Mineola Board and mayor announced the start of a multi-month rehabilitation of Wilson Park beginning Tuesday, Sept. 9, with changed access points, temporary playground closures and new amenities planned including walkways, repaving and additional bocce courts.
Mayor Pereira told residents at the Sept. meeting that rehabilitation work at Wilson Park will begin Tuesday, Sept. 9, and will require temporary access changes and closures for parts of the park.
The work will close playgrounds in the construction area and restrict park access to Liberty Avenue (south side of the pool) and the Union Avenue parking lot; Westbury Avenue access will be limited and portions of that parking lot will be closed later for repaving. Tennis and pickleball courts and ball fields will remain open but access points may be altered. The mayor said the work is being scheduled after the pool season to minimize disruption and that contractors aim to finish the phase by next spring.
Planned improvements described by trustees include replacement of walkways and concrete surrounding the historical society area, new lighting, repaving of a parking lot, and adding a second bocce ball court. Trustees said long-term plans include future pool work, but this construction phase focuses on north and east areas of the park.
The board asked residents to use alternate entrances while the project proceeds and said organizers planned the schedule so current senior and youth groups could use facilities through this winter and spring before construction begins. Officials urged patience and said the work aims to deliver a “brand new, well lit” park when complete.
Ending: Officials encouraged residents to check village announcements and the parks department for updated access maps and schedules during construction.
