Commissioners authorize bids for Highway Shop cold-storage improvements

Codington County Commissioners on Aug. 5 authorized advertising for bids to complete the cold-storage portion of the county highway shop, a project county staff described as the first phase of a two‑part upgrade.
County staff described the work as removing an existing concrete slab in an alleyway, insulating the cold-storage portion of the building, installing drainage and laying a new concrete slab, and replacing overhead doors to allow truck access. Staff said the next year’s work would include heating, insulating and exterior repairs including window replacement and ventilation improvements.
The motion to advertise was made and seconded during the meeting and carried on a voice vote. County staff said bids will be opened on Aug. 26. Commissioners noted the county is managing other capital projects, including the jail build, and that cost sensitivity will guide whether some portions (for example, doors) might be deferred if bids come in higher than expected.
County staff and commissioners described the vote as an authorization to advertise for bids; actual contract awards will be made after bids are opened and reviewed.
