Streets and Drainage offers free rock to homeowners for erosion control

Hilmar Magaha, operations coordinator for Streets and Drainage, said the department has implemented a new "rock program" that provides free rock from a quarry to homeowners for use in erosion control.

Magaha said the program coordinates pickup from a quarry and delivery to sites marked by homeowners, with the department arranging times and notifying residents. "We coordinate with the homeowners, let them know what time we're gonna be here," he said. He added that while the county supplies the rock, it does not perform repairs for stormwater damage caused by an eroding creek; homeowners must remove the rock from the right of way and place it on their property to address erosion.

Magaha described the program as part of a new service level for the department. "On our new service level, we've implemented the rock program, and my job is to coordinate with my guys to go to the rock quarry, pick up a load of rock, care about how much the the citizens need, and we deliver it out here to the site that's marked," he said. He also noted the homeowner responsibility: "...we offer the rock for free, but the homeowner themselves will remove the rock from the right of way and take it down and use it for erosion control on anything that's caused erosion on the property."

In a later remark, Magaha called the program "well, well thought out" and said he hoped residents would receive information on how to access it. "This is a well, well thought out program and and it's brand new. And I hope that that people get all the information on how to get to this rock program," he said.
