New Philadelphia — Students from Central Elementary described their student leadership program and explained how the school teaches and models respect, responsibility and safety during the board's building spotlight.
Becky House, principal at Central Elementary, introduced the fifth‑grade student leadership team and said members were selected through an application process that included teacher recommendations and essays. The students told the board they act as examples for peers and help reinforce the school’s expectations.
The student presenters—identifying themselves as members of the student leadership team—gave examples of what respect looks like in the classroom and hallways, described responsibility as taking ownership of actions (returning supplies, cleaning cafeteria tables) and defined safety as following routines and rules on playground equipment and school computers.
Students told the board that the leadership team promises to “lead,” “set a good example” and “speak up” by telling an adult when they see something that is not respectful, responsible or safe. Principal House said the program aims to create a kinder school culture and thanked teachers who support the program.
The presentation was followed by applause from board members; the board moved on after thanking the students and principal.
