WFRC, UDOT and partners launch Utah Active Transportation Implementation Academy for elected and appointed officials

Wasatch Front Regional Council staff announced a new Utah Active Transportation Implementation Academy, a joint WFRC–UDOT–MAG–UTA training program aimed at elected and appointed officials and their staff who want deeper practical skills for advancing active-transportation projects.
Hugh Van Wagon said the nine-session course mixes six online sessions with three in-person days at WFRC offices, and is free to participants with limited capacity; the curriculum will cover implementation topics such as funding, project types and construction considerations. Staff engaged a consultant (LaneShift) with experience in Northwest Arkansas to lead parts of the course. Sessions are primarily scheduled on Thursdays between midday and mid-afternoon; in-person sessions will be half- to full-day commitments.
Hugh asked committee members to identify up to three candidates who would benefit and to either encourage them to apply or send names to WFRC staff; the initial cohort will start in early December and run through April with a holiday break. When asked who the academy is designed for, Hugh said it is primarily for elected and appointed officials and staff who are interested but want more confidence and technical knowledge to advance active-transportation projects.
Committee members and staff discussed logistics and outreach; staff invited nominations via email and said an application form is available online. The announcement concluded with staff saying more details and an application link would be circulated to committee members.
