The Hammond City Board approved a request allowing city staff to consent to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency soil sampling of parkways as part of the federal Superfund cleanup of Federated Metals.
A city representative told the board the EPA seeks background samples across parkways to distinguish naturally occurring conditions from contamination related to the Federated Metals site in Robertsdale. The representative said the mayor's office, law department and other city agencies have been informed and that a similar request passed the park board the previous evening.
The board voted to authorize staff to proceed with the sampling authorization and to continue raising significant issues with the board as the project progresses. Staff said the city will coordinate with the redevelopment commission and park department and that EPA sampling is intended to support remediation decisions.
No sampling work was described in detail at the meeting; staff said they would return with substantive issues for board consideration as necessary.
