Councilors press for prioritized stormwater project list after Dawson Drive flooding concerns

Council member Jeff pressed for action after citing measurements and neighbor reports that the existing inlet “is probably poorly designed to catch the amount of” stormwater. Staff said the anticipated remedy likely will include resizing the pipe that crosses the property, reconstructing or lowering the inlet, and adding one or two additional inlets farther north to reduce volume before the basin. An engineering assessment was recommended for the road and inlet work.
Council and staff discussed criteria for prioritizing stormwater projects, including population affected and property damage. City administration said staff would assemble a list of at least six larger projects, including the Seventh Street Corridor project currently out for request for proposals, and present it to council for prioritization.
Councilors said prioritization should balance geographic equity and quick “low-hanging fruit” fixes that residents see daily; staff also noted some projects may require design and engineering funding and suggested grouping engineering for multiple small projects to gain efficiencies.
No formal action was taken; council directed staff to prepare the prioritized list for future council consideration.
