Placerville plans expanded downtown Halloween celebration; holiday tree lighting set for Nov. 28

Placerville Recreation and Parks staff and community partners described plans to expand the downtown Halloween trick-or-treat event and confirmed the holiday tree lighting will be held Nov. 28.
Chair Windle and staff said organizers co-sponsored by the Eldorado Community Foundation and local merchants transformed a past “free candy” Main Street trick-or-treat into an interactive event with carnival games, contests, a DJ and performances. Chair Windle said organizers plan to decorate light poles and run a candy-donation drive; staff requested volunteers and noted merchants can apply for no-fee vendor space so booths do not duplicate storefront businesses.
The commission listed large elements of the Halloween program: a costume contest, dance troupe, donut-eating and pumpkin-painting contests, a DJ (Norm) and planned appearances by community organizations including the Boys & Girls Club, which donated a 12-foot Jack Skellington prop. The Lions Club will run carnival games; staff said volunteers can work from a city tent even if they are not associated with a storefront.
On the holiday event, staff said Paul Ingalls at Sierra (sponsor) tentatively committed a donated tree; Red Hawk (corrected sponsor) and local donors will provide installation help. Staff said Thunder Valley had been mentioned in error earlier; the city corrected it to Red Hawk and local partner Doug Vierkamp. The city has a $5,000 sponsorship (reported in the meeting) and is finalizing logistics for lights and staging ahead of the Nov. 28 tree lighting. Red Dirt Ruckus is scheduled to perform; additional carolers and a barbershop quartet will appear and a children’s craft workshop will run in the Odd Fellows building.
Staff and commissioners encouraged downtown merchants and residents to volunteer and to donate candy; they also asked staff to space booths to avoid duplicating existing storefront offerings. No permit changes or expenditures beyond existing sponsorships were adopted at the meeting.
