The Placerville Recreation and Parks Commission interviewed Leah Zimmerman, a junior at El Dorado High School, and agreed to forward a recommendation to Placerville City Council to consider her as the commission's youth representative.
Director Dennis Nish introduced Zimmerman and said the item was part of an initiative to involve young residents in city commissions. Zimmerman described her community-service experience through AVID, Hands for Hope and Key Club and said she has participated in local volunteer events including a 2023 spaghetti feed serving families.
Commissioners spoke in favor of recommending Zimmerman. Commissioner Potter said he had read her letter and found “a lot of really, really good ideas,” and Commissioner Pitchley encouraged the commission to recommend her to council while noting that the council makes the final appointment. Director Nish told Zimmerman he hoped to meet with department heads and the city clerk and, if scheduling allows, move the recommendation to the Oct. 23 council agenda so she could start next month.
Commission members suggested joining the commission could count toward school community-service hours; Zimmerman said AVID requires 10 service hours per year and Hands for Hope requires 20. No formal vote to appoint was recorded at the meeting; the commission agreed to endorse her candidacy and send a recommendation to the City Council for the formal appointment process.
The commission said staff would follow up with Zimmerman about next steps and timing for the council agenda.
