Council discusses downtown lighting rollout and consultant timeline

Pleasant Grove council members and staff used the Sept. 16 work session to discuss how a near-term downtown lighting purchase should be coordinated with a longer-term downtown planning consultant.
Neil (staff member) told the council that new lights have been ordered and could be available for installation beginning Dec. 1, though he cautioned it may be too late for a full holiday-season finish. Several council members said they wanted the consultant’s plan to “be aware that there’s a construction project” so the consultant can coordinate placement, base type and future parking or curb changes.
Council members noted the consultant’s scope and schedule — staff said the consultant engagement will take roughly six months to a year and will include stakeholder outreach — and discussed whether to delay the light installation until the consultant’s recommendations, or to proceed and adapt the consultant’s plan to the new fixtures. One council member said moving lights later into a bulb-out or parking change would not be “a catastrophic cost,” and staff said moving power to a new pole location is feasible if needed.
Staff recommended proceeding with the light purchase and integrating the installation details into the consultant’s work so that both shorter-term and long-range goals align. The council did not set a separate vote at the work session but asked staff to keep the consultant informed as plans advance.
