County approves multiple nonregulatory signage changes after engineering safety reviews

The Elkhart County Board of Commissioners approved a slate of nonregulatory signage changes after the highway engineering division presented safety reviews and recommendations on multiple local intersections and road segments.
Kyle Wagner of the highway department summarized a long list of proposed changes that county engineering had been reviewing for about a year. Among the measures approved were removal of a school bus turnaround sign at County Road 17 and County Road 40 after confirmation it was no longer in use by Wa-Nee or Goshen schools; relocating and adding stop-ahead signs at several intersections; and installing a two-inch red retroreflective strip on each stop sign post beneath signs where recommended.
Other recommendations approved included: adding dual stop signs and "cross traffic does not stop" placards at multiple County Road 31/46/23/36 intersections, installing speed limit signage (30 mph) at Starner Avenue near County Road 10 at subdivision entrances, adding bicycle warning signs on County Road 4 near County Road 35, installing yield advance warning signs at the Peanut roundabout (County Road 18/13/115), updating a signal-ahead sign near Jimtown High School at the new intersection of County Road 3 and County Road 24, and placing school-warning signs near Deer Trail School on County Road 13 north of County Road 52.
Wagner said engineering conducted crash and speed studies where requested; some reviews concluded no change in the legal speed limit was warranted but did recommend supplemental warning or regulatory signage. A motion to approve the full package passed on voice vote.
The county will incorporate the approved signage changes into its work program for installation and maintenance.
