Parks and Recreation staff told the workshop they will ask the City Commission to approve up to $40,000 in additional funding for Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) special-detail permits covering park details and special events for the remainder of fiscal year 2025.
Melissa (Parks and Recreation Director) said the department budgeted $107,000 for BSO special details in FY 2025 but has expended the budget due to an increased number of events and higher BSO hourly rates, including holiday and regular detail rates. "We're asking for approval to not to exceed $40,000...for the rest of FY '25 for special detail permits," Melissa said, adding staff believes the full $40,000 will not be needed.
When asked about the hourly-rate increase, Melissa did not have specific figures at the workshop but said rates had "almost doubled." The item will be on the Aug. 27 consent agenda for the commission to authorize the additional expenditure; staff said funding is needed to cover park and special-event safety details through the fiscal year.
