City of Tamarac staff said they will amend the Land Development Code to tighten pre-application neighborhood-meeting requirements after residents raised concerns about notice and timing for development proposals.
Mahir Hounsault, Assistant Director of Community Development, said staff recommends several new requirements: the meeting must be open to the public and recorded by the applicant; city staff must publish meeting notice on the city website and social media and provide a copy to members of the City Commission; mailed notices must go to individual unit owners as well as community boards; and no public hearings will be scheduled until staff receives a summary of the meeting from the applicant.
Hounsault said the changes stemmed from a recent Kings Point rezoning application where some residents and association presidents said they were not adequately informed in advance. "Now we're saying it in the code: the meeting shall be open to the public and any member of the public may attend the meeting," he said.
Staff told the workshop the amendments clarify existing practice, add mailed notice and recording requirements and require the summary of the meeting be provided to staff and reviewed by advisory boards or the commission prior to hearings. The item will go to the Aug. 27 City Commission meeting for formal consideration.
