Tamarac staff told the City Commission on Monday that a resolution establishing an adjustment factor would raise the city's water rates by 15% and sewer rates by 5% as part of a multi-year revenue-sufficiency plan.
The proposal, which staff said will appear on the commission agenda for the Aug. 27 meeting, implements a rate schedule the city adopted in 2024 that provides for a series of increases over 10 years. Christine (staff member) said the increase stems from a bond rate covenant that requires rates be set at levels sufficient to cover operating and capital needs.
"This action is in line with our rate covenant," Christine said, adding that the covenant is a requirement in the city's bond documents. Christine also presented a comparison showing Tamarac remains among the lower-cost utilities in Broward County for a 4,000-gallon monthly bill: staff displayed $62.97 as the current comparative bill figure and said the increase would slightly change Tamarac's county ranking.
Staff said notice of the proposed change was provided to customers on the August water bill. No vote was taken at the workshop; staff framed the item for the formal City Commission meeting scheduled Aug. 27.
If adopted at the commission meeting, the change would apply to the FY 2026 rate schedule and is intended to maintain compliance with the city's bond covenants and planned capital spending; staff did not present a separate motion or vote record at the workshop.
