County IT director gets bid waiver approved to finish fiber connections critical to network upgrade

Justin, the county’s IT director, told commissioners Aug. 11 that several remaining fiber and cabling issues are the major blocker preventing a full campus network cutover and a planned September completion for the county’s new systems.
Justin asked the board to waive competitive bidding for $12,483 to run additional fiber between the communications closet and the server room, to add redundancy between the Administrative Building and the MVC building, and to replace an aging Cat 4 run to the sheriff’s office. He also said repair work is needed for damaged fiber inside communications closets.
Justin said vendor VTR — who previously performed similar work in July — could complete the jobs quickly and that the work would remove a critical obstacle to the county’s move to a new AIT-based records and email environment. The commissioners approved the bid waiver by voice vote.
The board directed IT to proceed; Justin said staff would then flip over new workstations and continue preparations with limited downtime for county services.
No contract details were finalized at the meeting; the waiver authorized procurement without a full bidding timeline to expedite the September network completion.
