Events and sales: mixed results for summer events; large HEMA tournament coming in August

At the Aug. 11 meeting, events staff reported attendance and registration figures for recent and upcoming events and described scheduling changes for a few summer experiments.
Staff said the new Arena Wars event in July drew about 400 spectators, short of expectations, and that celebrity golf and wildfire response reduced fighter availability; staff intends to try another Arena Wars event in November (staff noted Nov. 15 as a target date). "We tried it. It just summer is definitely not going to work, for this particular type of event here, in Carson City," staff said.
The Battle in the Sierras boxing event, organized in partnership with a local boxing club and Parks & Rec, is an endorsed event at Fuji Park Exhibition Hall and expected to bring about 50 fighters from Sacramento and other California areas. For the Carson City Outlaw Flat Track Racing event organizers reported about 200 registered riders and had released up to about 500 tickets as of Aug. 4.
Staff highlighted the Fraufact HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) Women’s Tournament as a rapidly growing draw: organizers expect roughly 80 female competitors for the Aug. 30–31 tournament and described it as the largest women’s‑only rapier and saber tournament in the U.S., and the only women’s broadsword and small sword tournament in the U.S. (statements made by staff in presentation).
Staff also noted the downtown car revival drew approximately 550 cars and provided photo and promotional assets used in marketing. Vice Chair Reno agreed to represent the CTA board at the November Arena Wars event.
No formal board action was taken; staff said it will continue to monitor ticket sales and adjust scheduling for future events.
