County manager reports: athletic park nearing completion, EMS franchise solicitation underway

Staff reported that Lee County Athletic Park construction is wrapping up with a grand opening planned for Sept. 13; the county has advertised an EMS franchise solicitation, received two applications and will return proposals for commissioner review.
At the July 21 meeting, county staff reported progress on capital projects and operational solicitations.
Assistant County Manager Jennifer Gamble updated commissioners that construction at Lee County Athletic Park is substantially complete, punch-list items remain and the county expects to open on schedule with a grand opening planned for Sept. 13 at 2 p.m. Final signal work and a DOT widening project at the park entrance will follow as the N.C. Department of Transportation schedules its work, which staff said could occur in the coming months and could affect final utility tie-ins.
Gamble said the library building is expected to be weather-tight by September and that mechanical, electrical and plumbing work is underway. On emergency medical services, staff said the current franchise contract ends June 30, 2026; the county has advertised and received two applications for the EMS franchise and will present details for commissioner review when the evaluation is complete.
Staff also noted that the historic courthouse repair item on the agenda had been discussed earlier and that several reports — including preliminary monthly financials and a sales tax distribution report — were included in the commissioners’ packet. The board’s next scheduled work session will be at McSwain Center on Aug. 4, and staff said they will post additional meeting information and advertise the athletic-park grand opening.
