Board reviews draft elementary science and social-studies curriculum; no new standards or district-adopted resources

The Blue Valley Board of Education received a presentation and review of draft elementary science (K–5) and social-studies curriculum documents on July 21.
Director of Curriculum and Instruction Jennifer Luzinski told the board the drafts reflect teacher feedback preferring integration only when natural; the previous documents had integrated ELA, science and social studies for elementary grades. Luzinski said there are no new state standards and no new district-adopted instructional resources in the drafts. She noted the district retained the Amplify CKLA third edition knowledge-strand as the co-curricular foundational-skills resource for elementary ELA.
Luzinski described the drafts as an “unfurling” of standards into manageable units with identified “power standards” for each course. She said the elementary ELA draft documents were not presented because they were completed too close to the end of the school year; the district intends to implement ELA documents as drafts this year for teacher feedback and return final, non-draft documents in the regular cycle.
The presentation explained the curriculum-document template and the role of power standards in guiding instruction. Luzinski said the science and social-studies drafts will be shared with the district’s curriculum advisory groups and returning committee members for feedback.
Next steps
Administration will collect teacher feedback during implementation of draft ELA documents and continue the review cycle for science and social studies; final adoption of revised documents will follow the district’s established review and approval timeline.
