Destiny Holmes, cofounder of the nonprofit Garden Youth Outreach, asked the Board of Mayor and Aldermen on Oct. 13 to place Jefferson Street Park revitalization on a future agenda and said local residents would support the effort through volunteer work, fundraising and community input.
Holmes described the park as a longtime neighborhood gathering place that has “fallen into disrepair” and said revitalization would provide a safer, more inclusive place for families and children. “We are formally requesting that the revitalization of Jefferson Street Park be placed on the board's agenda,” Holmes said. “Respectfully, we are not going anywhere.”
Holmes asked the board to consider the project an investment in community well‑being and encouraged the city to work with residents on volunteer and fundraising efforts. The board did not take a vote or make a formal commitment during the meeting; the request was made during the public-comment portion of the agenda.
Why it matters: Jefferson Street Park serves neighborhood residents; restoring the park could affect access to outdoor play, community gatherings and neighborhood pride.
Ending: Holmes said Garden Youth Outreach will continue pursuing the issue until the board places the item on a future agenda.
