Family thanks Douglas County parks staff for memorial bench at Bingham Lake

At the Sept. 23 Douglas County Board of County Commissioners meeting, Parker resident Carol Hanson and her daughter Ally Byrne publicly thanked county parks staff for installing a memorial bench at Bingham Lake to honor Hanson’s son.
Hanson described the bench as a place friends and family can visit; she thanked staff members Morgan Morehart, Shane Falk and Bobby Johnson by name and asked the county to publicize the memorial bench program more broadly so other families might use it. “We have a gorgeous bench now out at Bingham Lake that is actively enjoyed by children and grandparents, walkers,” Hanson said.
Her daughter, Ally Byrne, said the bench has become a place for family and friends to feel close to her brother and praised the school-based mental-health supports her child received after the loss. “They helped us find the I MATTER program, which is one of the Colorado opportunities for kids to get access to free therapy,” Byrne said.
Parks staff and county commissioners accepted the recognition, presented staff with certificates and encouraged the family to use the bench. Morgan Morehart told the board the parks team installs roughly six to ten memorial benches per year. No formal county action or funding decision was taken during the presentation.
The county thanked the family for their remarks and said it would consider the request to raise awareness of the memorial bench program.
