Council approves $26,700 for architectural revisions to finish long-running fire station renovation

Garden City — The Garden City City Council on Monday approved $26,700 to hire the NCS Team for architectural design services to finalize drawings for the city’s long-running fire station renovation.
City staff said the contract termination with a prior construction contractor and follow-up construction management reviews revealed the existing CAD and architectural drawings needed detail and updating so the project could be bid and finished. City Manager and construction management staff said they solicited quotes and reduced an initial $56,000 estimate down to roughly $26,000 through a combined approach; the firm before council was recommended by the city’s construction manager, Metrix.
"You need to establish a precise set of building plans when you're doing construction," the city manager said. Staff told council that the original plans were drawn for building and that later, finer details were not completed; those details must be added before rebidding and finishing the project. Chief Randy Keane said some finer details were omitted in the original plans and must be determined now.
Councilmember Dole moved to approve the agreement with the NCS Team in the amount of $26,700 and authorized the city manager to execute the documents; the motion passed 7-0. Staff said this design work will be covered by grant funds for the project, not the general fund.
Council members asked about the NCS Team’s experience; staff said Metrix had worked with the firm and secured the lower price by leveraging existing CAD work rather than starting from scratch.
