Madison County accepts $3.76 million federal grant to replace Bridge 47

The Madison County Board of Commissioners voted to accept a federal rural program grant covering approximately 80% of the cost to replace Bridge 47 on County Road 300 West, north of A Thousand North, and authorized the county to execute the grant agreement.
Terrence Matthews, an asset management technician in the county engineering department, told the board the total replacement cost is “just under $4,700,000.” He said the county was awarded 80% of that amount—approximately $3,756,000—with the county's local share at roughly $939,000 to be paid from the Cumulative Bridge Fund. Matthews asked the board to authorize Commissioner Richland to sign the agreement on the county’s behalf; the board voted in favor.
Commissioners noted that maintaining a well-funded Cumulative Bridge Fund helps the county leverage outside grants. The engineering office said the bidding notice (RFP) would be posted the following day and that bids would open in September (the meeting record states September 2030). The county said the grant covers all project phases, and that the award includes funding through design and construction.
A motion to accept the grant and authorize signing the agreement carried by voice vote.
What happens next: Staff will advertise the project, proceed with procurement, and return to the board with contract awards and prior-authority items tied to the project schedule.
