Health department to reapply for Safety Pin grant, host car-seat clinic with automotive safety program support

The St. Joseph County Health Department told commissioners on July 29 that it will reapply for the Indiana Safety Pin grant and will pursue a non-monetary automotive safety program grant that supplies up to eight child car seats for community clinics.
Renata Williams, director of the care unit, said the Safety Pin grant supports the women's care center, community health workers and the mobile integrated health coordinator. The program connects women early in pregnancy, helps with insurance navigation and referrals, and has been expanded to include home visiting services. She said the health board had unanimously approved seeking the grant.
Williams also described the automotive safety program application. The grant does not provide cash; instead it offers up to eight child passenger seats to organizations that host a child passenger safety clinic. The health department plans to run a clinic in September, part of its Ember educational series, that will include education, car-seat checks and raffles for replacement seats for families whose seats no longer meet safety limits.
Both applications received unanimous approval by the county commissioners.
