Animal-control staff report shelter construction delays and high intake; revenue and donations continue

Coffee County animal-control staff provided an update Aug. 28 saying the new shelter’s construction schedule has shifted but the project remains viable, and staff described continuing high intake and active rescue partnerships.
Craig, the staff member reporting on animal control, said the shelter contractor had a delay related to how the front porch/entrance was being built; the change means the porch structure will sit on its own columns rather than tying into the main building. Craig said the finish date is now expected around March (year not specified in the update). He reported that sewer, water and electricity are in place and that some concrete was poured recently.
Craig also said that intake remains “through the roof,” that rescue groups are providing crucial transfers and that the department has brought in about $23,000 in revenue since Jan. 1. He reported donations of feed and a half-semi load of straw for winter and noted the shelter has been replacing aging equipment — including two 40-year-old garage doors, which Craig said were replaced with new rails and motors at a cost of about $12,000.
Staff described ongoing work with rescue groups to move animals out of the shelter and said volunteers and partner organizations remain important to operations. No formal committee action was taken on the animal-control update during the meeting.
