South Gate honors Girl Scout who installed hydration station that tracked more than 4,000 refills

At the start of the Sept. 9 meeting the South Gate City Council presented a certificate of appreciation to Girl Scout Ambassador Aliyah Martinez for her Girl Scouts Gold Award project, “Drip Drip.” Martinez told the council she had raised funds, hired a contractor and arranged installation of an indoor bottle‑filling station at the South Gate Sports Center. She said the device’s counter had recorded more than 4,000 fills since installation.
City staff and councilmembers praised Martinez’s initiative. The mayor read a certificate recognizing the project’s contribution to sustainability and public health and presented Martinez with a custom plaque and a QR code to her project website. Martinez said the project had helped her learn about community collaboration and sustainability goals and showed volunteers and the city can work together on small, local environmental steps.
No formal council action was required for the recognition; the presentation was ceremonial and the council took a photograph with Martinez after the certificate was read.
