Arkansas City proclaims September 2025 National Suicide Prevention Month, recognizes direct support professionals and two firefighter paramedics

The Arkansas City Commission proclaimed September 2025 as National Suicide Prevention Month, designated Sept. 7–13, 2025, as Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week and recognized two firefighter AEMTs who completed paramedic training during its meeting.
The commission’s proclamation on suicide prevention highlighted the national awareness campaign’s goals to inform the public about warning signs, reduce stigma and encourage people to seek help. The proclamation also directed residents to the national crisis hotline by calling or texting 988 and encouraged attendance at local events. A representative of the Hope Squad said the group is partnering with the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Cowley County and Merchants on the Move to hold a community event at Paris Park on Sept. 13 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with about 18 resource tables, food service from the Optimist Club and activities for families.
Commissioners also adopted a proclamation recognizing Sept. 7–13, 2025, as Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week, noting the role of direct support professionals in assisting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to access housing, employment and recreational activities. The proclamation asked citizens to observe the week with appropriate programs and to seek information from organizations with expertise in services for people with disabilities.
Near the end of the recognitions portion of the meeting, the commission acknowledged firefighter AEMTs Will Hankins and Jackson Slater for completing an emergency medical education paramedic program and becoming firefighter paramedics for the city.
Procedurally, the commission approved the meeting agenda as presented. The approval was made by motion and passed after the chair called for the ayes and announced the motion carried.
The proclamations and recognition did not include legislative actions or binding ordinances; the items served as formal acknowledgments and community announcements by the mayor and commission.
