Officials and residents discuss sightlines, patrols and utility alignment after crash at Butler-Warren Road intersection

A resident raised concerns during public comment about a recent serious crash at the Butler–Warren Road and Heritage Club Drive intersection and asked whether the county had updates on improvements discussed after a prior fatality there.

County staff described the available accident data and short-term options. Staff said there have been 10 accidents in 11 years at the intersection, with six accidents of the specific type described (vehicles pulling off Heritage Club Drive onto Butler–Warren) over the same period. Staff said those counts fall short of traffic-signal warrants: the location does not meet volume warrants and an accident warrant for a signal would require five or more of that accident type in a 12-month period.

Staff and the board discussed possible measures to improve sightlines, including removal of landscaping on HOA property adjacent to the right-of-way and relocating a pedestal utility box. The transcript records discussion of whether moving an existing Duke Energy pole could improve sightlines but also warns that moving one pole could align it with another and worsen sightlines unless utilities coordinate the alignment. The county said it would check with Sheriff Riley and the City of Mason about stepped-up patrols and would follow up with Duke Energy about possible utility adjustments.

Speakers noted jurisdictional complexity: Heritage Club Drive and some poles are inside the City of Mason, while most of Butler–Warren Road lies outside the city in township jurisdiction, which affects patrol and maintenance responsibility. County staff said they would ask the city and sheriff’s office about increased patrols and pursue utility relocation where feasible. No specific new infrastructure project, funding source, or schedule was announced during the meeting.
