Police officials told the public safety committee the Aurora Police Department is seeing larger academy classes and strong lateral recruitment, which staff said should reduce vacancy levels by year-end.
A staff presenter reported the department expects a new academy class in October of roughly 35 recruits; "we're aiming for 30 to 35 per academy class," the presenter said. Officials said attrition earlier in the year had been higher but has decreased as larger classes are graduating. Department representatives credited hiring-process changes and lateral bonuses as factors attracting officers from other jurisdictions.
Committee members discussed expedited lateral programs and said about a dozen lateral candidates were in the pipeline for an expedited lateral program. Staff said the department has seen interest statewide and expects double-digit net gains in authorized headcount by the end of the year if classes and lateral hires proceed as planned.
Members praised the hiring changes and asked staff to continue reporting staffing numbers; staff said the committee packet includes current staffing and training figures and that future updates are available in subsequent packets.
