The Marietta City Council authorized Public Works to install two speed tables on Austin Avenue between Lawrence Street and Skyview Drive following a public hearing and neighborhood petition, the council decided Aug. 13.
Public Works staff reported a neighborhood meeting and a signature ballot process that identified 56 affected parcels; the requester submitted 39 signatures, which met the policy's 70% approval threshold. Staff said two separate speed readings were taken and that the street met volume and speed criteria outlined in the city’s traffic-calming policy. The estimated cost for the two speed tables is $3,000.
During public comment, resident Caleb Buxton, who helped collect signatures, said nearly all owner-occupied units reached supported the measures and that additional signatures were available after the submission. "Every owner occupied unit signed yes in favor of these, except for 2 units," Buxton said, adding that more signatures were available if the city needed them.
Council member moved to authorize Public Works to install the two speed tables as shown, with an estimated cost of $3,000. "Motion carries seven-zero," the clerk announced following the vote.
Public Works will coordinate installation at the indicated locations and the item will be implemented through the department’s traffic-calming program.
