Sawyer County public health staff told the Health and Human Services committee Aug. 12 that nine cases of measles have been confirmed in Oconto County and that the county is coordinating outreach and information distribution.
"There have been nine cases of measles confirmed in Wisconsin, in Oconto County," Julie, a public health staff member, reported. She said regional and local public health offices have shared vaccination guidance and travel advisories through social media and local news outlets.
Public health staff highlighted other upcoming community programs: a county "clean sweep" for household hazardous waste, electronics, medications and sharps set for Sept. 16 at the Sawyer County Fairgrounds from 2 to 6 p.m.; and two "Walk for Tomorrow" mental health and suicide-prevention events — one in Winter (Sept. 20) and one in Hayward (Sept. 26 at 4 p.m.). The department is also working with regional coalitions on opioid prevention and will participate in a legislative breakfast Aug. 20 in Wausau.
Staff said they are notifying under-vaccinated patients and offering vaccines at clinics as appropriate. The committee discussed coordination with hospitals and schools to push public-health messaging.
Ending: Public health urged residents to check vaccination status if they have traveled and to use county resources for vaccine information and upcoming community events.
