County approved a one-time $40,000 increase to the problem-solving courts allocation after staff said unanticipated transportation expenses pushed the program beyond the original $50,000 allocation; staff said the increase is one-time and requested $75,000 in next fiscal year's budget.
The Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a request to add $40,000 to the county’s allocation for problem-solving courts, which include adult drug court, mental health court and veterans treatment court.
Wendy Perrin, senior court operations consultant, explained staff had originally budgeted $50,000 but had not anticipated transportation expenses for program participants; the added $40,000 will cover transportation and allow the courts to continue services through the end of the fiscal year. Perrin described the programs as diversion-style specialty courts with conditions tied to treatment; she said the current funding supported 96 participants for services including drug testing, substance-use and mental-health treatment and transportation.
Commissioners asked whether the $40,000 was a one-time expense; Perrin said it was. She also noted staff had requested $75,000 in next year’s budget to accommodate transportation in ongoing funding. Commissioners approved the expenditure and asked staff to be judicious and continue to seek Drug Abuse Trust Fund support and other sources.
