Carson City trustees approve PE exemption policy after debate over verification and academic trade-offs

Carson City — The Carson City School District Board of Trustees voted 4–2 on Aug. 12 to adopt a revised Policy 05/29 (independent study in physical education) that allows students to receive exemptions from school PE when they document participation in approved, outside activities.

The policy revision was presented as a second reading by staff member Richard Bringhurst, who said the district included the Nevada Administrative Code guidance and a Nevada Department of Education memorandum in the board packet. “You will see the Nevada Administrative Code that it's based upon,” Bringhurst told the board, and staff provided a frequently asked questions document and a list of approved activities to guide implementation.
