Parks & Recreation reports grants, maintenance plans and celebrates Independence Fest turnout

Town parks staff reported on recent programming, maintenance, grant applications and a large Independence Fest turnout during the Parks Board’s Aug. 6 meeting.
Jill (last name not specified), the town’s special events manager, presented a recap of Parks & Recreation Month and a detailed report on the July 4 Independence Fest. She said the children’s parade drew an estimated 25,500 participants and the evening portion at Bakersfield Park peaked at about 20,000 guests. ‘‘We had over 25,500 participants in the children’s parade,’’ Jill told the board. Staff said the event saw only 33 medical contacts and two transports, numbers staff credited to lower temperatures and rapid response from emergency services.
In department operations, staff reported maintenance and program updates: the Community Activity Center (CAC) is moving to weekend-only outdoor pool operations after school starts; sand filters on both pools will be replaced and water slides will be refinished next season. The CAC lifeguard teams placed first and second in the North Texas Guard Games; both guard teams qualified to compete at state.
Parks staff also briefed the board on two grant applications. Chuck Jennings, Parks & Recreation director, said the town submitted an application to the Texas Department of Transportation trail-funding program; staff reported the program received 224 eligible applications totaling roughly $1 billion while available funding was about $250 million. Staff said awards will be recommended by the Transportation Commission in October. Separately, staff submitted a 50/50 matching grant application to Texas Parks & Wildlife for Leonard & Helen Johns Community Park; the TPW program will consider awards of up to $750,000 and notifications are expected in December or January.
Other park development notes included recent installations at Peter’s Colony Memorial Park (play equipment, veterans plaza base and water wall work), new benches at Parker Square, bubblers and interpretive signs work at Spring Lake Park, and plans to bid construction for Post Oak Park. Staff also reported hiring updates and that three maintenance-worker positions and a park development manager opening remain active recruitments.
Board members thanked staff for the events and the maintenance work and asked follow-up questions about grant competitiveness and pond/fountain repairs in town parks. Staff said they will continue to pursue grant funding, refine project designs and report back as grant results and construction scheduling become final.
