Bannock County commissioners approved an agreement Wednesday to provide an ambulance on standby at the Idaho State University (ISU) Rodeo in September and waived the usual standby fee.
The waiver covers a nine-hour ambulance standby requested by the ISU Rodeo Club. Kenny Cannon, ISU rodeo coach, told commissioners the event will include about 250 contestants from roughly 10 colleges and universities and will attract local hotel stays and RV hookups. He asked the county to help reduce costs so the rodeo program can continue operations and support students.
Wes (ambulance staff) and Kendi (ambulance staff) presented the request on behalf of the ambulance district. The district estimated the full cost for a nine-hour standby at $1,530. The district said it typically staffs such events with a mix of on-duty personnel and call-in staff; under that mix the overtime exposure would be about $675, and if the entire event required overtime staffing the exposure would be $1,350. “We will have at least an overtime exposure for this ambulance stand by of $675,” the ambulance representative said.
Commissioners discussed local economic benefits including RV and stall rentals and asked that the county be included in event advertising. One commissioner moved to sign the agreement and waive the fee; the motion passed on voice vote.
The agreement requires the ambulance district to provide the standby service; the county will absorb the stated overtime exposure from current budgets. The record does not specify whether the county required a contract amendment beyond signature authority or any follow-up reporting from the ambulance district.
The commissioners wished the rodeo organizers success and indicated some members planned to attend.
