Tiburon names Christa Granewald as new artist laureate

The Tiburon Town Council on Aug. 6 unanimously appointed Christa Granewald as the town's artist laureate, following a recommendation from the Heritage and Arts Commission.
The appointment, made by resolution and authorized for execution by the town manager, caps a public presentation by Arjun Gupta, chair of the Heritage and Arts Commission, and brief remarks by the outgoing laureate, Richard Rosen. Granewald, a Tiburon resident and longtime artist, will serve a four-year term under the town's artist laureate program, which the council created in February 2001.
Gupta told the council the commission's special selection committee, which included the mayor and members of the Heritage and Arts Commission, vetted candidates and recommended Granewald. Gupta said Granewald is “deeply connected to place, process, and collaboration” and described her proposals for community-focused public-art projects and intergenerational programs. The council then invited Granewald and Rosen to the dais for brief remarks.
Richard Rosen, the outgoing laureate, congratulated Granewald and expressed support for her tenure. Granewald said she planned to use the town's open spaces for installations and "invite all residents to see themselves as part of a living artwork rooted in place and history." The council then moved, seconded and approved the resolution by roll call vote; all members present voted yes.
The council's staff report (with one typographical correction noted at the meeting: the artist laureate position was created in 02/2001, not 2021) says the laureate works with the Heritage and Arts Commission on public programming and typically completes one substantial community project during the term. The resolution authorizes the town manager to enter into an agreement with Granewald to define the scope and deliverables for the appointment.
The council honored Rosen for his service and work establishing the town's public-art program and outreach with the Belvedere Tiburon Library and Reed Union School District. The Heritage and Arts Commission and town staff will follow up with the council on the formal agreement and expected timeline for Granewald's initial projects.
