Committee selects five semifinalists for Tenth and Osprey mural; finalists to receive stipends

The Public Art Committee selected five semifinalists from a pool of 133 applicants for a mural on the Tenth and Osprey residential building, a city-led Call for Walls project. The committee chose Sunny Behan; Truman Adams; Trinity Rivard; Anne Sophie Gaudet; and Federico (Frederico) Masa as the top five semifinalists, and approved moving forward with the stipend process: 3–5 finalists will receive $500 to develop full-color proposals and meet with building and neighborhood representatives.
Staff said the call received 19 local, 51 regional, 61 national and 2 international applicants; 28 applicants were on the City of Sarasota artist roster. A seven-member jury (including neighborhood and building representatives and staff) scored proposals on artistic merit, theme alignment (Florida flora and fauna with local bird emphasis), qualifications, feasibility and site integration. The committee emphasized public outreach: finalists’ full proposals will be posted for neighborhood feedback and the committee will make a final selection at the November meeting.
Committee members praised the depth of talent and discussed balancing visual complexity with the residential scale and adjacent Gillespie Park. The approved semifinalist list advances to the stipend and finalist phase.
