Fairfield Union board hears start-of-year updates, approves consent items and routine contracts

The Fairfield Union Local School District Board of Education received updates from the superintendent and building administrators on Aug. 4 as the district prepared to open for the school year, and approved routine consent agenda items and several contracts.
Superintendent Chad Bellville told the board maintenance teams have completed major summer projects, including resurfacing and striping the track and silk-coating parts of the main campus parking area. Bellville said staff and substitutes worked over the summer to prepare buildings and that the district posted a limited-response opening for a math intervention position posted in mid-July.
Bellville also said the district has circulated a revised cell-phone policy to parents and posted it in handbooks, citing guidance in House Bill 96 related to limiting cell phones during the school day. "We did send a copy of that out to parents via email or messenger system. It's posted on [the] website," Bellville told the board.
High school principal Mister Schafer reported full staffing for the school year and said the high school will offer 28 College Credit Plus (CCP) courses and eight Advanced Placement courses, plus new CCP offerings including college marketing, public speaking and two new science courses (organismal biology and physics through mechanics). Schafer also outlined open-house and athletics dates, including the high-school open house on Aug. 13 and early-season schedules for golf, volleyball, soccer, cross-country and football.
Rushville Middle School principal Miss Hall highlighted interior painting and IT upgrades across buildings, new devices for teachers, and plans to emphasize vocabulary and math instruction. Director of elementary education Mister Roger Knott said the elementary buildings will continue CKLA and writing initiatives and are implementing Second Step as a social-emotional learning curriculum.
During the consent portion of the meeting the board approved multiple routine items by motion, including the consent agenda itself (workshops/conferences and financial items), resignations of staff, substitute teacher and classified lists, volunteer approvals, special-education contracts, and a contract with Ohio University to host school-counseling practicum placements. The board also approved a resolution to advertise and receive bids for purchasing conventional school buses and vans.
Several personnel matters were approved with limited discussion: the resignation of a high-school math teacher effective Aug. 31 and the resignation of an instructional leader for grades 5–8 effective immediately; substitute lists and special-education contracts were accepted as presented. The board moved each item by standard motion and approved them in roll-call votes.
Board members also approved authorization to advertise and receive bids for conventional school buses and vans, and a motion approving six bus routes as presented. The board set a next meeting for Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. in the district office conference room.
