Council approves first reading to limit neon signs in Downtown zoning

The City of North Augusta on Aug. 4 approved on first reading Ordinance 2025-12, an amendment to Article 9 (Signs) of the North Augusta Development Code, removing neon lights as an allowed sign type in the Downtown 1 and Downtown 2 zoning areas.
Assistant Administrator JD McCauley (filling in for the city administrator) told council members the change affects downtown proper on Georgia Avenue (Downtown 1) and adjacent areas down to Riverside Village (Downtown 2). The amendment was brought forward by the Planning Commission as part of a code cleanup to restrict neon signage in those corridors.
Councilmember Robert Freitas moved the ordinance on first reading; the motion received a second. Council members voted unanimously in favor on first reading.
