Dorchester 02 facilities staff report multiple school construction and maintenance projects on schedule; developer delays persist at Ponds site

Facilities staff updating the Dorchester 02 facilities meeting on July 28 reported that several major school construction and renovation projects are progressing on schedule while other projects face delays tied to contractor issues and outstanding developer approvals.

Staff said work at Sand Hill is moving forward and the contractor planned to pour the second-floor slab on Friday; masons are working on exterior walls and the project remains on the schedule that was created on Oct. 9. At Summerville Elementary, staff reported demolition is nearly complete, the concrete slab has been left in place while permits are secured, and the district received a coastal zone consistency approval letter this week; the building permit review with the Office of State Fire Marshal (OSF) remains pending with comments expected to be returned soon.

At the Ponds site, staff described ongoing negotiations with the developer and said the county has tried “a myriad of different things” to move the developer forward but, as of the meeting, the developer has raised new obstacles — including tree-related issues — before signing off on required items.
