Pharr–Reynosa bridge reports volatile June traffic; revenues rise as truck imports grow

Luis Bassan, bridge director for the Pharr–Reynosa International Bridge, told the board July 23 that June 2025 showed mixed traffic patterns across vehicle classes and plazas and a year-over-year revenue gain.
Bassan said total bridge crossings for June were 99,670, an increase of 2,658 vehicles (2.74%) compared with the same month in the prior fiscal year. Southbound car crossings for June were 42,759, a decline Bassan described as a 3.5% drop from the comparable period last fiscal year; northbound car crossings were 44,025, a 14.6% increase.
The director walked the board through comparisons by plaza. He said Gateway was up 6% with a daily average of 3,125 cars; Veterans/Los Tomates was down 7% with a daily average of 4,566; Donna was down about 11% with a daily average of 1,835; and Roma was up roughly 6% with a daily average of 1,784. McAllen/Hidalgo was reported down 23% and Anzalduas down 13%; combined McAllen/Anzalduas daily average was 9,790 and the speaker summarized the local group as down 20% overall.
Truck counts rose in several categories. Southbound truck crossings and comparisons by plaza showed increases in empties at Anzalduas (+8%, daily average 126) and large increases at Eagle Pass (+66%, daily average 1,126) and Progreso (+60%, daily average 224). Overall across the system Bassan said northbound and southbound truck crossings combined totaled 115,043 for the month, a 5.94% increase compared with the same month last fiscal year.
Bassan also broke northbound truck counts into full and empty trucks: 38,655 full trucks and 19,477 empty trucks in June. He said 17,162 of the full trucks were classified as ag trucks and represented about 30% of produce imports for the month.
On revenue, Bassan reported $1,747,133 for June, an increase of $122,092 (7.5%) from the same period in the previous fiscal year.
When board members asked about an observed 73% increase at the Los Indios plaza, Bassan said diversions at major Mexican logistics corridors and intermittent blockages have pushed commercial truck traffic to alternate crossings. He said the pattern has shown month-to-month volatility since March and that uncertainty about tariffs and regional logistics is expected to continue shifting flows.
Bassan noted the bridge has discussed hours-of-operation with regional partners and that changes to northbound or southbound operating hours could affect passenger volumes and airline connections in nearby border cities. He said the board should expect “seesaw” monthly patterns while international trade and tariff uncertainty persist.
