Commission approves administrative consolidation of volunteer fire districts under county fire ID to improve efficiency and ISO rating

Sandoval County commissioners voted on July 23 to administratively dissolve existing volunteer fire‑district entities and consolidate them under Sandoval County Fire & Rescue’s FDID number, a change county fire leaders said is administrative only and will not alter volunteer chiefs’ operational duties.
Fire Chief Bagley and Battalion Chief Kenny Snow presented the measure, saying the state fire marshal encourages consolidation to improve efficiency. Bagley told the commission the change will let the county manage one budget rather than multiple small budgets and would allow countywide projects to be funded centrally. The county also expects to pursue a single ISO (Insurance Services Office) rating for the consolidated district, which Bagley said could lower insurance rates in more remote areas and increase state funding that is allocated by rating.
“Absolutely nothing will change operationally as the district chiefs’ volunteer duties and expectations will remain the same,” Bagley said, describing the action as “only an administrative procedure.” He added consolidation will improve the ability to undertake countywide projects and distribute funds from a larger consolidated budget.
Commissioners asked whether affected volunteer districts had been notified and whether they supported the change. Chief Bagley said the departments had been notified and that the volunteer chiefs were supportive. The commission approved the resolution by roll call; all commissioners voted yes.
