Easton Area SD reviews schematic design, value‑engineering for new high school; board to consider schematic approval Aug. 12

Pleased to give a brief update from our ad hoc meeting two weeks ago and the schematic design process for the new high school, Mike, a representative from CHA, told the Easton Area School District Board of Education during its meeting. He said VE (value‑engineering) worksheets submitted by the public, board members and the design team were “due today” and that the team will review those worksheets at the next ad hoc public planning meeting in about two weeks.

The update matters because the schematic design phase will shape the budget and schedule for the new high school and related site and athletics work. Consultants described a phased approach that could fast‑track site work and athletic fields so those parts of the project could begin as early as 2026, and staff said the board will be asked to approve schematic design and “plan A and B” at the board meeting on Aug. 12.

At the meeting, consultants from Alloy5 (Bill and Jamie) and CHA presented the design intent, school organization and next steps in the VE process. Bill, of Alloy5, described the proposed commons as a two‑story hub that opens onto a courtyard and connects the cafeteria, gym and academic wings; Jamie, of Alloy5, showed how smaller academic “commons” and glass‑faced classrooms would bring daylight into interior spaces to support collaborative learning. Mike, of CHA, said the design team and civil engineer Colliers have been conducting site borings and test pits and are coordinating relocation of baseball and softball fields.

Consultants emphasized that the VE process aims to “increase the value of the project,” not simply cut cost. Mike said the team will compile ideas into a single worksheet and review them line‑by‑line at the ad hoc workshop, then present the highest‑scored items later in the process. The district’s live budget for the project was shown in a line‑item breakdown by construction division; presenters said that budget will be refined as schematic design moves into design development.

When asked about schedule, presenters said one listed board meeting date (Aug. 26) was incorrect and that the board should expect an approval request on Aug. 12; they also said the Act 34 process required by the Department of Education for new school construction (and for renovations exceeding 20% of building area) remains part of the approval timeline, with an Act 34 hearing anticipated in January. Board members discussed whether the VE presentation should be rescheduled if an August meeting date changed; presenters said the VE timeline is flexible and items arising in biweekly design meetings can be added as necessary.

Board comments and questions focused on schedule clarity and public notice for ad hoc meetings; staff said upcoming ad hoc meetings (including a VE workshop) will be clarified for the public and the board. No formal board action on schematic design or funding was taken at this meeting; staff indicated a formal vote on schematic design and plan A/B will be requested at the Aug. 12 board meeting.

The presentation also reviewed programmatic choices — commons as multiuse academic and event space, expanded daylighting, and a proposed gallery space accessible to the public that would showcase student work — and reiterated that final materials (for example, retaining wall types) will be determined once geotechnical and site investigations conclude. The consultants said the VE process will continue after schematic design concludes, as decisions about materials and lifecycle costs are refined.

Board members were given several schedule and process items to note: VE worksheets were due the day of the meeting; an ad hoc public planning meeting will review worksheets in about two weeks; site and athletics work (baseball/softball fields, field house, practice fields) are being evaluated for a 2026 fast‑track start; and schematic design approval (plans A and B) will be presented to the full board for action on Aug. 12, ahead of an Act 34 process and a January Act 34 hearing. Presenters said the schematic budget will be updated at the end of schematic design and again during design development.

The board did not vote on the schematic design at this session. The district posted that the ad hoc VE meeting schedule will be clarified for the public and board members ahead of the next session.
